International Women’s Day, 8th March and Mother’s Day, Mothering Sunday, 9th March
Brent Chinese Association organised a small group of women to come together on Saturday 9th March 2024, for lunch, to celebrate International Women’s Day ( 8th March) and Mother’s Day ( 10th March). Many met for the first time. The story we created, each contributing a line, on “Being a woman”, without knowing what was written prior to one’s turn, demonstrated the beauty of togetherness and teamwork, connecting us to one another.
Being a woman…
Makes you multitask as an octopus (1)
strong, determined and beautiful (2)
Being there for everyone, everywhere (3)
A lot to learn and to breakthrough (4)
Is hard sometimes! It’s still a man’s world and we have much to teach them! (5)
Is wonderful! Breaking glass ceilings! (6)
Contributing to society (7)
Strong, smart, being a woman, we have to try extra hard to be the same as men (8)
Women are incredible and I am in awe of those who become leaders and are making positive changes to the world (9)
Being a woman, is being everything to all (10)
Little time for yourself (11)
I am pleased to be a woman! (12) - the final line.
The lines were chronological, without being re-arranged.
A one liner contribution from 12 women 🩷 to the story of being a woman. How beautiful is that? Great, isn’t? Then we proceeded to create a story on “Mother’s Day, Mothering Sunday”.
Our team story for Mother’s Day, Mothering Sunday:
Lifting up one another through thick and thin (1)
Being a mother can be such a challenge but there is nothing a mother won’t do for their children to enable that they thrive (2)
Mum is superhero, she is capable of doing anything, she can do magic in life. She is excellent and often alone (3)
Always taking care of the family in additional to her work (4)
A reflective day for me. Glad to be a mother to my children! (5)
Is a day for us to show that women are part of THE society (6)
Proverbs 31 woman (7)
Being grateful for the sacrifices my mother made for me (8)
Being a Cool Aunt (9)
Being a mum is the greatest love of all (10)
A chance to say thank you for the amazing women who brought us in the world (11)
I’d like a day to do nothing! (12)
A one liner contribution from 12 women in celebrating of Happy Mother’s Day 💕
PS: Dr Kong, our Chair, found out what Proverbs 31 woman is…
Meaning of a Proverbs 31 Woman
She does not wait to be served but rises early, even before sunrise, to delegate tasks and engage in business. She possesses “a range of manual, commercial, administrative, and interpersonal skills.” This woman “opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy”.
The day was a success with great chatter through eating together, connecting with one another, celebrating womanhood and strengthening communities.

Chinese New Year celebration lasts for 15 days with each day having a special meaning with traditions to honour. The first day of this Tiger year was on 1st February 2022.
Families traditionally spend the first few days of the New Year with close family members, reunited for the new year, spending time together to share festive meals or visiting one another.
Brent Chinese Association celebrated on the 13th day, which fell on a Sunday, a good day for a community gathering and we could also celebrate, in advance, the 15th day, which is the Lantern Festival, marking the completion of the Chinese New Year celebration. The 15th day is also known the Chinese Valentine’s Day!

Then we headed towards North London. We provided a free bilingual (English/Chinese - Mandarin and Cantonese) advisory and health check clinic to the Chinese communities on Sunday 10 October, at the Hyde United Reformed Church, Colindale. Many presented with difficulties in understanding the NHS system and registering with the NHS General Practitioners (GPs). Those who registered with GPs found difficulty in communicating their health problems to their GPs due to the language and caltural custom barriers. The attendees had their high and weight taken, blood pressure, pulse, BMI and oximetry checked. The session was well-received and feedback was positive. We also gave out free food bags to the Chinese community.
